What is Morse code?
Morse code is a method of encoding text characters as sequences of two signals: short dots (called "dits") and long dashes (called "dahs"). Each letter of the alphabet, each digit and a handful of punctuation marks map to a unique pattern of dots and dashes. The code was designed so that the most frequently used letters in English have the shortest patterns — the letter E, the most common letter, is a single dot.
In Morse code, the gap between dots and dashes within a single character is one unit, the gap between characters is three units, and the gap between words is seven units. When written down, dots and dashes are usually separated by a single space, characters by a larger space or a slash, and words by a slash. This tool uses a single space between characters and " / " between words, which is the most common convention for written Morse.
History of Morse code
Morse code is named after Samuel Morse, one of the inventors of the telegraph, though the code used today was largely refined by Morse's assistant Alfred Vail. The original version dates to the late 1830s, when the telegraph made it possible to send electrical signals over long distances for the first time. Because the telegraph could only transmit on-or-off pulses, a coding scheme was needed to represent letters as patterns of pulses.
The version that became standard for international communication, known as International Morse Code, was finalised in 1865 at a conference in Europe. It replaced several competing national variants and is the code this tool uses. Morse code remained the backbone of maritime communication until 1999, when the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System replaced it, and it is still used by amateur radio operators around the world.

Which characters does it support?
The letters A–Z, the digits 0–9, and common punctuation: period, comma, question mark, exclamation mark, slash, hyphen, parentheses, equals, colon, semicolon, apostrophe, quotation mark, at sign, ampersand and plus. Any unsupported character is skipped when encoding.
How are words separated in the output?
Letters within a word are separated by a single space, and words are separated by " / " (space slash space), which is the most common written convention for Morse code.
Can it translate non-English text?
It supports the Latin alphabet used by International Morse Code. Characters with accents or non-Latin scripts are not part of standard Morse and will be skipped during encoding.
